What is an “attorney-consulted non-attorney”?
An “attorney-consulted non-attorney” is our term for a legal professional who is not a licensed attorney, but provides certain legal services with consultation from a licensed attorney on a case-by-case basis. This allows non-attorneys, such as Legal Document Assistants (LDAs) or Paralegals, to offer specific legal support services in accordance with California law, through expert guidance by directly consulting with experienced and knowledgeable licensed attorneys as necessary or desired. Non-attorneys can not provide legal advice and can not represent you in court.

Legal Document Assistants (LDAs) vs Paralegals
LEGAL DOCUMENT ASSISTANT? PARALEGAL?
Don’t worry! Most people in the general public do not know the difference between a Legal Document Assistant (LDA) and a Paralegal. Use the guide below to compare LDAs and Paralegals.
Role
LDAs help individuals prepare legal documents for self-representation in legal matters.
Paralegals perform substantive legal work under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney.
Regulation
LDAs are required to be registered and bonded in the counties where they operate.
California Business and Professions Code sections 6450-6456 outline the qualifications and duties of Paralegals.
Limitations
LDAs cannot provide legal advice, represent clients in court, or select forms for clients.
*Our LDAs work independently, but regularly consult with licensed attorneys to ensure legal accuracy and compliance. We only distribute legal materials that have been published or approved by licensed attorneys. We also maintain strong relationships with licensed attorneys in the event our clients need or desire legal advice.
Paralegals cannot offer legal services directly to the public or operate independently.
*Our Paralegals are available to assist attorneys looking to meet fast approaching deadlines or delegate their workload.
Property Managers
Role
Property Managers oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of their client’s real estate investment.
Regulation
California Business and Professions Code (BPC) sections 10131-10133 outline the qualifications and duties of Property Managers.
Limitations
Property Managers must have a real estate license, or work under a licensed real estate broker, unless they meet one of the exemptions listed under BPC 10133(a) or do not engage in real estate activities (BPC 10131).
*Our Property Managers do not engage in real estate activities.
